When "belt" became "cage" (22 years of search data)

For some reason, it's always fascinated me how people refer to their "chastity devices." Dig through the old threads on places like Chastity Mansion or Chastity Forums and you'll see people calling their ball-trap cages"chastity belts." These days, if someone says"chastity belt," we all picture a full-steel waist belt from someone like Behind Barz, My-Steel, or Neosteel — not a cage. Somewhere along the way the vocabulary shifted, and I wanted to see if I could actually watch it happen.

Turns out you can, in Google search data. One methodology note up front, because it matters: Google Trends only lets you compare five terms at a time, and it scales every comparison to its own peak — so you can't just screenshot a handful of single-term charts and line them up (I learned this the hard way and nearly posted some very wrong numbers). I stitched several queries together onto one shared 0–100 scale using overlapping "anchor" terms, so the figures below are genuinely comparable between terms.

A few things I found interesting

1.)"Chastity belt" used to run the entire show. In 2004 it didn't just lead, it lapped the field — a full-year average of 73. "Chastity device" existed but was basically a rounding error next to it (~9), and "chastity cage" / "cock cage" barely registered. If you were shopping for gear back then, you searched "chastity belt," whether you actually meant a belt or a cage. That's the whole ball-trap-called-a-belt thing showing up right in the data.

2.) "Chastity cage" came from literally nothing. It doesn't post any real volume until late 2005, then bounces around near zero for years before it just… grinds. Slow, steady, and relentless — it's the most consistent long climb in the set.

3.) The takeovers happened later than they feel like they did. In order:

- It passed"chastity device" in early 2015.

- It passed "cock cage" around the end of 2017.

- It didn't overtake the old king, "chastity belt," until mid-2022. That one genuinely surprised me. The belt→cage shift feels like ancient history, but by the numbers the crown only changed hands about three years ago.

4.) The terminology shift is right there in black and white. "Chastity belt" fell from ~73 (2004) to ~18 today, while "chastity cage" climbed from 0 to ~34 over the same window. "Belt" used to be the catch-all for everything, cages included, and as "cage" became the word for the ball-trap style, "belt" narrowed down to mean the full-waist steel stuff — and shed a ton of search volume on the way.

7.) Locktober's seasonality

None of the terms above care what month it is — "chastity cage" in October looks about the same as any other month (~1.0×). But "Locktober" is a completely different animal. It's essentially zero for eleven months of the year, then goes off every single October. Averaged from 2019 on, October runs about 9× the rest of the year for that term.

It went from a rounding error in the mid-2010s to a genuine, growing annual event, peaking at 28 in October 2024 — the biggest Locktober on record. The part I find interesting is where the spike lives: almost entirely in the word "Locktober" itself, not in the shopping terms. People aren't necessarily buying more cages in October — they're searching the ritual by name.

To sum things up, over 22 years the language flipped: "chastity belt" went from the undisputed default to a shrinking niche term, "chastity cage" grew from nothing into today's go-to word, and"Locktober" went from nonexistent to an accelerating yearly tradition.

As for my wife and I, we just say "belt" for a couple reasons. When we started exploring chastity, it was during a time when "chastity belt" was still the catch-all, so we just got used to it. But also, I like how innocent sounding the word "belt" is. If anyone ever hears us (our kids especially) discussing the "belt," it just sounds like an article of clothing ("Don't forget to pack your belt!" "Are you wearing your belt?" etc).
